Home to volcanoes and a vibrant city lifestyle, Auckland is a great holiday destination to explore solo, with friends or the whole family. With so many things to see and explore – it is NZ’s largest city after all – you’ll want to make sure you’re choosing just the right things to complete your stay.
Here are a couple of recommendations to get you started.
Climb a volcano
Here in Auckland, you have plenty of volcanoes to choose from – around 50 in fact. Spend time tackling one (or many) of them, and experience the incredible views from their peaks. If you’re up for the exercise, we recommend Maungawhau, Mt Eden. It’s the highest volcano in Auckland, and gives you breathtaking views of the inner city that photos will not do justice.
Stop to smell the roses
Sometimes we get so caught up filling our holidays with attraction after attraction that we forget to pause and appreciate the little things. Why not stop for a moment, let time slow, leave that purse and activity-filled itinerary at your hotel and enjoy a day smelling the roses? Dove-Myer Robinson Park, often referred to as Parnell Rose Garden, is free, pretty and is the perfect setting for another beautiful day in Auckland. Bring your phone or camera; you’re bound to take some great pictures.
Time to look at things from a different perspective
After that day of bliss, let’s kick things up a notch. You may want to pack spare underwear for this next activity, especially if you’re afraid of heights. Trust us though; it’s an experience you’re going to love! A staggering 328 metres off the ground, the Sky Tower is epic. You have the choice to take in great views indoors, or put on that brave face and head outside for a Sky Jump. Yes, that is exactly what it sounds like; you will jump off the building. Good luck.
Check out a cool bridge
Still seeking that rush that comes from doing crazy gravity-defying activities? We’ve got you covered. If you’re looking for a healthy dose of adrenaline, you can head to the Auckland Harbour Bridge. How daring you decide to be once you get there is totally up to you. If you want to ease into the terrifying activities, perhaps begin with a fun stroll/climb to the top.
Had enough of the pretty sights for now? Great. Attach yourself to a bungy cord and lean in. Bungy jumping off the bridge is an activity you won’t soon forget. If you’re not afraid to muck up that hairdo of yours, you can also choose to bungy jump and have your head dip in the water. Refreshing.
Treat yourself to some delicious food
As a bustling hub, foodies can rejoice with a massive assortment of cuisines to choose from after a hard day of holidaying. Walk the city streets until you find an aroma, vibe or menu that piques your interest.
No matter the pace or the company you’re with, you’re sure to love your trip to gorgeous Auckland.
