Your Brisbane Airport Destination Guide

Boasting a balmy, sub-tropical climate for most of the year, Brisbane offers a welcome dose of sunshine for many Australians rugging up in the southern regions during those winter months. It also serves as a conveniently situated gateway to some of the state’s most cherished landmarks. Grab yourself a rental car and head a few hours north to soak up the sights of the stunning Sunshine Coast, or head down south and experience the iconic Gold Coast.

Before you decide on your preferred sun-drenched coast, do yourself a favour and spend some time in Brisbane to fully appreciate everything this compact little city has to offer.

Cuddle an iconic Australian critter

It doesn’t matter if you’re a tourist or a local, there’s something magical about cuddling a koala. These illusive critters have experienced declining numbers in recent years, and while not yet listed as endangered, it’s important that we understand and appreciate the environmental struggles the Australian koala is facing.

So, make sure you complement your Brissie stay with a visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. The organisation is one of many committed to the protection and preservation of Australia’s favourite tree huggers. Show your support by buying the quintessential koala cuddle photo. While you’re there, you’ll also get to spy the usual collection of Aussie fauna, from wombats, kangaroos, dingoes, snakes, wallabies and even crocodiles.

Lounge on a man-made beach

Nestled within Brisbane’s popular South Bank you will find Streets Beach, an entirely manmade lagoon residing on the banks of the Brisbane River. Equipped with a sandy shore, lush palms and even its own mini island, this fake beach is indistinguishable from the real thing. Better yet, it’s conveniently located just a short walk from the CBD, bringing the tranquil vibe of the beach to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Cruise on over to Brisbane’s islands

Brisbane’s coast is sprinkled with a smattering of postcard worthy islands. The crown jewel of this collection is Moreton Island, the third largest sand island in the world. Accessible by a 70-minute ferry ride, this idyllic island is mostly made up of national park, offering visitors a picturesque landscape of sandy lagoons and tranquil waters.

For snorkelling or scuba diving enthusiasts, the island is also home to the Tangalooma Wrecks, offering a sensory underwater delight. There’s plenty of above water activities available among Brisbane’s islands too, from ocean kayaking to sandboarding.

Celebrate Indigenous culture

Walk in the footsteps of Aboriginal elders and appreciate Brisbane’s rich cultural heritage with BlackCard Cultural Tours. If you’re visiting during winter, you’ll also have the opportunity to experience Quandamooka Festival and truly celebrate Aboriginal culture, learning about local language, tradition and dance.

A visit to the Sunshine State isn’t complete without a generous layover in the state’s immersive capital. Do yourself a favour and add Brisbane to your next holiday itinerary.
