Your Picton Destination Guide

Take to the water

Being a town known for its ferry service, it’s no surprise that many of the attractions in the area are water-based.

If you want to start things slow, enjoy a gentle kayak adventure exploring Marlborough Sounds. For learners, there are plenty of guided tours available. Not only will they add the peace of mind of having an expert alongside you, you’ll also get some insider information on the best spots for amazing views and less boat traffic spoiling your nature sounds.

If you want to be the one creating that boat traffic, there are plenty of cruises to choose from. Whether it’s simply a way to get from A to B and start an adventure or the cruise is an experience in itself, you’re sure to find an option to tick your boxes.

Become a wine aficionado

Prefer to remain on land? There’s plenty to explore with activities accessible by foot, bike or car. Picton is the ideal base for exploring the wider Marlborough region and one thing this region is known for is its incredible, award-winning wine. You really are spoiled for choice here, with over 150 vineyards, so you need to pace yourself. There are tours available of course, but if you’re a captain of your own destiny you can find a designated driver and find your own perfect drop.

Not big on wine? The drive to the vineyards and incredible views once you arrive will impress anyone.

Have unforgettable experiences with wildlife

Throughout the region, there are plenty of opportunities to see animals amid spectacular scenery. From birds to seals, whales to dolphins, take your pick and head out for an adventure you’ll never forget. Popular choices amongst visitors are the whale and dolphin cruises where you’ll watch the water acrobatics of these beautiful creatures while taking in the natural beauty of their environment. If you’d like to get up close and personal, there are also a number of cruises that allow you to swim with the dolphins yourself.

Take part in an epic journey

60 minutes from Picton, the Queen Charlotte Track is a highlight for many visitors offering incredible coastal views and undisturbed native rainforest. We mention ‘epic’ because this track is 70 kilometres long, and can take three to five days to complete. The great part about this track is you can choose a small section to tackle, or complete the whole track if you’re up for it. You can also mix and match your mode of travel by choosing to kayak, walk or bike ride.

No matter which of the three Ws you like the most, you’re sure to find the perfect adventure in Picton and wider Marlborough Sound.
